Having Fun with Median!

On Friday the 2nd graders learned about how to find the median in a set of numbers.  This concept is so fun because we can do a variety of things to collect numbers!  What we did is a beanbag toss.  The students were placed into a few small groups.  Each student tossed 10 beanbags into a crate, we recorded the number made into the crate, and found the the median for each small group.  We discussed that our purpose was just to collect numbers; it doesn't matter if you get all 10 in the crate or none in the crate!  A variety of numbers will be great to work with!  The students learned the steps of putting the collected numbers in order from least to greatest and then work to find the middle number.  They had a blast!

Making Venn Diagrams

Last week the class learned more about Venn Diagrams by making their own, collecting the data, and answering questions.  Whenever the students have the opportunity to be going around the classroom and asking their classmates questions to collect data for math, they love it!

Making Bar Graphs

After learning about bar graphs the students had the chance to come up with their own topic for a bar graph.  Each student chose a question for the graph and four possible answers.  Then the students went around and polled their classmates.  They collected the data on a tally sheet and then used this information to create their bar graphs.

Odd and Even Math Monsters

On Friday we combined our art skills with our math skills to make odd and even math monsters.  In 2nd grade we've recently reviewed and learned about the difference between odd and even and what odd and even numbers end in.  Each student had to make a unique monster with at least 4 odd body parts and 4 even body parts.  They had so much fun with this while practicing their math skills!

Doubles Rap

We performed our Doubles Rap yesterday!  The class had so much fun with this, and it's a great way for us to practice our doubles facts.  Check out our video below.

Math Stations

In the beginning weeks of school the class was slowly introduced to our math stations.  During our math block the students move through 3 stations: teacher lesson, math assignment, and math choice which includes a partner game, i-pad math skill practice, and and an additional partner station to review a skill. I love this approach because it allows me to see small groups for the lesson and differentiate instruction based on the the needs of the group.  We started the year with this cute "Math About Me" project.
