2nd Grade Volcanoes

The 2nd graders are currently learning about the layers of the earth, how volcanoes are formed, and the different types of volcanoes.  Every year the students are so excited to finally get to make the volcanoes and erupt them on the last day of school!  This year the students have the option to make a volcano from home.  If you are able to make a volcano, I'd love to see your pictures 2nd grade!

Check out these awesome volcanoes!

Rainbow in a Jar

This is our final matter activity and another one to explore density.  To make this rainbow in a jar, you begin with the most dense layer up to the least dense layer.  It is tricky though as some of the layers can mix a bit.  I hope you have fun with this today 2nd graders.  I keep looking for real rainbows out in the sky with our mixture of sunny days with some added rain.  Until then, let's enjoy this rainbow in a jar.

Exploring Density of Matter

The 2nd graders have been learning about matter.  Matter has 3 states: solid, liquid, and gas.  In these final matter activities, the students will be experimenting with one property of matter- density.  Density can be a tough concept to grasp.  It means how heavy something is for its size.  The first exploration is a sink or float activity.  I'm so proud of all of these 2nd graders for working so hard from home!

Acrostic Poems

This week our 2nd graders are working on writing acrostic poems.  With each phone call and Zoom meeting, I loved hearing all the creative poems these students are writing.  Check out this fantastic poem below!  The details are so specific and the art work is beautiful!   2nd graders, I'd love to see your poems!

Oobleck! Solid or liquid?

This week the students are learning about the 3 states of matter and their properties.  The optional activity to explore the properties of matter is making oobleck!  This is an activity that leaves you wondering is it a solid, is it a liquid, or is it both?  I love how this 2nd grader always includes her little sister in her science projects!  I look forward to seeing your pictures 2nd grade!  Look below for more of our 2nd graders with their oobleck!
